What Is the Unicode Consortium?
It's a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 by a group of tech companies who understood that the Internet could never grow globally without a common standard for representing every written character in the world, in every language.
Its mission was to develop a system capable of representing every written language on the planet within a single, coherent structure, and what seemed like a technical project ended up becoming a fundamental piece of the world's digital infrastructure.
What Was the Original Problem?
During the early decades of computing, there was no universal way to represent text. Each manufacturer developed its own character tables and its own encodings. What worked correctly on one system could show up completely differently on another.
It was an especially serious problem when computer networks and information exchange between countries began to expand. Many of us remember running into text like:.

These errors happened because one system interpreted data using an encoding different from the one used to create it. What one computer read as the letter "ñ," another might interpret as a strange, meaningless combination of symbols.
Unicode proposed defining a unique code for every character (letters, numbers, symbols and emojis), regardless of the platform, program or language. For example:
- A = U+0041
- ñ = U+00F1
- € = U+20AC
The earliest versions of Unicode focused on the alphabets most widely used in computing at the time, where a letter had the same meaning on any device on the planet. Over time, increasingly complex writing systems began to be added, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew and many other characters. Each new version expanded the standard's ability to represent cultures, languages and forms of communication from around the world.
As the Internet expanded, so did Unicode. Scientific symbols, currency signs, historical characters, ancient alphabets and, decades later, the famous emojis were added. What started as a solution for letters and numbers ended up becoming a gigantic catalog of human digital communication. This was one of the great invisible achievements of the Internet.
Since its first version in 1991, the standard has evolved to include more than 140,000 characters, covering historical scripts, modern scripts and technical symbols. Its widespread adoption was essential to the globalization of the Internet and of software.
The Consortium is made up of corporate, institutional and individual members. Technical decisions are made through the Unicode Technical Committee (UTC), which evaluates proposals for new characters, scripts and emojis. The process is transparent and public, allowing input from the global linguistic and technical community.
Unicode is fundamental to contemporary digital communication. It powers operating systems, browsers, social media and messaging. Its role in standardizing emojis has also expanded its cultural influence, making it a key player in the evolution of global digital language. Its standards are present in practically everything we do in the digital world.
