Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy, into a wealthy, cultured family. Like her siblings, she was named after the city where she was born. Her parents were William Edward Nightingale and Frances Smith, both part of the British aristocracy. That upbringing gave her a privileged education and let her travel across Europe from a very young age. Despite an environment that expected her to follow the traditional path of a Victorian lady, Nightingale showed a strong inclination toward study and a calling for service from an early age. Her interest in science and mathematics grew out of the advanced education she received, a rarity for women of her time. As a teenager, she experienced what she described as a "divine calling" to devote her life to caring for the sick, which set her on a path that broke with her family's expectations.
Defying the social norms of her time, she decided she wanted to become a nurse, a profession that wasn't respected back then and was associated with lower-class women. Despite strong opposition from her family, she held firm to her decision and sought formal training. In 1851 she traveled to Germany to study at the Kaiserswerth Institute of Protestant Deaconesses, where she learned about patient care, hospital administration and hygiene. This training was foundational to her development as a professional and laid the groundwork for the reforms she would later carry out.
Back in England, in 1853 she took on the role of superintendent at the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in London, where she applied her knowledge to improve patient care and organization. That experience earned her recognition, but it was her work during the Crimean War that cemented her place as a historic figure.
The Crimean War
The Crimean War (1853-1856) was a conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance made up of the Ottoman Empire, France, Great Britain and the Kingdom of Sardinia, aimed at curbing Russian expansion into Eastern Europe. The main fighting took place on the Crimean Peninsula, south of present-day Ukraine, and the war was marked by its brutality and dismal conditions on the front lines.
In 1854, when the British press reported on the terrible sanitary conditions in military hospitals, the government decided to step in, and Nightingale was sent along with a team of 38 volunteer nurses to Scutari, in Turkey, where a large military hospital was located. On arrival, she found unsanitary, overcrowded facilities with an extremely high death rate, caused not so much by battle wounds as by infectious diseases like cholera and dysentery, brought on by poor hygiene and ventilation.
Along with her team, she introduced immediate reforms: improving cleanliness, managing the food supply, and reorganizing care for the wounded. These improvements brought the death rate down from an alarming 42% to just 2%. Thanks to her nightly rounds tending to patients, lamp in hand, Nightingale earned the nickname "The Lady with the Lamp," a symbol of hope for wounded soldiers.
The war ended in 1856 with the alliance's victory, following the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Even so, Nightingale continued her humanitarian work at the Scutari hospital until 1857.
The Rose Diagram
After her experience in Crimea, she returned to England determined to transform the military health system. She gathered data on the causes of soldiers' deaths and discovered that unsanitary conditions, more than battle wounds, were the leading cause of death. Even so, she realized that the data alone wouldn't have the impact she wanted unless it was presented clearly and understandably.
To make this finding easier to grasp, she created her famous "Rose Diagram," an innovative way of representing statistical data. This circular chart showed, month by month, the causes of death at the military hospital. The radial segments represented the months, and each segment was split into three colors:
- Blue: preventable infectious diseases.
- Red: deaths from battle wounds.
- Black: other causes.
The area of each wedge was proportional to the number of deaths, which made it immediately clear that most deaths were caused by infection, strengthening Nightingale's case for the importance of sanitary reform. This diagram was one of the earliest effective uses of data visualization in public health, and it demonstrated the power of statistics to communicate complex problems persuasively.

Legacy
The diagram's impact was profound. Thanks to the clarity with which it depicted preventable deaths, Nightingale managed to convince the British government of the need to reform military hospitals and improve sanitary conditions in both peacetime and war. Her work led to the creation of the Royal Commission on the Health of the Army, where her recommendations were put into practice to improve hospital hygiene, ventilation and design.
The Rose Diagram also cemented her as a pioneer in using statistics to improve public health. Her meticulous approach to gathering and analyzing data influenced not just the military sphere, but civilian medicine as well. In recognition of her achievements, she became the first woman admitted to the Royal Statistical Society, and was later named an honorary member of the American Statistical Association.
